ARTIST NOTES: Inner contradiction is a universal human condition. We may long for a healthy body, yet still indulge in drinking, smoking, or unhealthy food. We may wish for a peaceful world, yet react with anger and opposition when our personal boundaries are unintentionally crossed. These opposing impulses coexist within us as a natural and persistent state.
This work presents the presence of these “two inner selves” through the use of color and pattern, suggesting both the spear and the shield. While they appear in opposition, they are inseparable and ultimately form a single whole. The work invites reflection on how the concepts we rely on to understand the world may themselves be inherently contradictory.
