ARTIST PROFILE

Hello, I am Chih-Min Chiang, a Barrett artist. Originally from Taiwan, I currently reside in Australia. Art has been a constant in my life, evolving through different stages. Drawing and painting have been my passions since childhood. In 2021, during the pandemic, I found myself reflecting on the brevity of life. This contemplation prompted me to rediscover my passion for art, leading me to invest substantial time in painting.

My artistic journey has been largely self-driven, devoid of any formal educational framework. Fueled by passion, I have navigated this path independently, seeking guidance from individuals with artistic experiences around me. Engaging with local artists, I’ve delved into various aspects of the art world, exploring matters of printing, design, and absorbing any necessary information. Actively participating in art events, visiting exhibitions to broaden my perspective, and diving into magazines and books have all played vital roles in expanding my artistic breadth. Importantly, I integrate my unique experiences in a distinctive manner to express anything I wish to convey.

My works seamlessly blend the figurative and the abstract, incorporating imagined and dynamic interactions of color and texture, drawing inspiration from nature and reflecting life. I also enjoy using different materials to express myself or using my fingers to roam freely on the canvas, allowing the artwork to express itself more freely.

In early 2022, I took my first step into the art world. My artwork, titled ”The Other Side,” earned me a nomination for the Glover Prize. I held my inaugural exhibition at Unicorn Lane in Barrett from June to September 10th. Fortuitously, it garnered front-page coverage in our local newspaper, ”The Messenger.”

Looking ahead to 2023, I am excited to participate in more captivating art exhibitions, including the Moorabool Paste-Up Project. This initiative aims to create unique and enchanting public spaces, providing immersive creative experiences for the entire community.

Starting in 2023, I devoted more time to creating artwork centered around psychotherapy themes. Many individuals grow up accompanied by verbal and physical violence, experiences often followed by depression or various mental illnesses, which may indirectly lead to physical harm. Many people remain trapped in this cycle throughout their lives, unable to break free. I aspire to use my art as a language to help and inspire others, assisting them in regaining strength and moving away from suffering.

I firmly believe in the healing power of artistic expression. Through my artworks, I aim to guide viewers to discover their inner sanctuaries or explore deeper aspects of life, nature, and the self. Art, for me, is not just a form of personal expression but a means to facilitate understanding, healing, and empowerment for others.
