Coastal Surge by Lyn Steele

Features

ARTIST NOTES: This piece captures the raw energy and ever-changing motion of the ocean as waves surge and crash onto the shore. Created using fluid acrylic techniques, this piece embodies the dynamic interplay of sand, foamy whitewash, and the swirling blues and greens of coastal waters. I am drawn to the movement of water—its constant ebb and flow, its power and unpredictability. In this painting, the colors merge and shift organically, much like the ocean itself, reflecting the untamed beauty of the coastline. The art process: This flow painting was created using a process known as the Dutch pour, where fluid acrylic paints, each carefully mixed with archival mediums, are poured directly onto the canvas. Rather than using brushes, the paints are guided by tilting the canvas, blowing through a straw, or my favourite... blowing with a hairdryer. This creates organic, flowing designs that reflect the spontaneity of nature itself. Only high-quality, archival products have been used ensuring the longevity of your piece, and each painting comes with a signed certificate of Authenticity. Because of the natural flow technique and the extended length of drying time, you may notice slight textures and small irregularities in the surface; these qualities confirm the painting’s authenticity as a unique, hand-painted work rather than a reproduction. The paint continues over the side of the painting so that it can be hung as a complete art work without requiring an external float frame. However if you prefer an external frame one can be ordered through Bluethumb at the checkout. Many of these pieces are versatile, allowing you to hang them as either landscape or portrait, and because of this flexibility, you’ll find my signature on the back of the painting. This way, you can decide which orientation best suits your space without being limited by a signature on the front. I hope you find as much joy in the beauty and movement of this painting as I found in creating it.

ARTIST BIO

I'm an avid photographer and self-taught artist, inspired by a deep love of nature. My work focuses predominantly on Australian wildlife and birds, capturing their unique personalities while celebrating their beauty, character, and spirit.
My art practice begins with photography, which forms the foundation of every painting. Working exclusively from my own photographic references ensures originality and allows each piece to carry personal memories and emotional depth. I paint primarily in oils and acrylics on stretched canvas, generally preferring to work on larger-scale pieces.
More recently, I’ve found a passion for flow art, where paint moves freely across the canvas using the Dutch pour technique. Through flowing colour and abstract form, each work captures the energy of natural landscapes and seascapes, resulting in a one-of-a-kind original piece.
I have exhibited and sold my work over many years and been very fortunate to receive various art and photography awards at local and national levels. I now aim to dedicate a greater portion of my life to the creative process…. life is simply too short not to follow your passions! With so many creative ideas still to explore, I often wish there were more hours in the day to immerse myself in the artistic chaos of my studio.
