ARTIST NOTES: STORY BEHIND THE WORK

CHINOISERIE is a painterly contemplation on the cultural value of favour. Within this piece, Angeline has placed several ginger jars, as though displayed as a favoured collection of chinoiserie by an avid devotee.
Within these fragile vessels, as if trapped in a gilded cage, we see three young women and six birds, all adding to the decorative beauty of the jars. Six smaller jars complete the set.
In this image, Angeline contemplates the often tier-like custom of apportioning favour to everyday things; including people. She ponders the lives of those people and creatures in history who may seem to have been "favoured" and "fortunate", especially women.
How fortunate were they? Was being favoured a blessing or a curse?

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Angeline's work is a hat-tip to Gustav Klimt. She uses pencil to create 3-dimensional beings, which she places in a 2-dimensional space made of taffy-thick acrylic paint. Gold acrylic is used to embellish the work with decorative detail.
The delicate pencil is coated many times with a UV-protective, matte acrylic varnish. This allows Angeline to produce works in pencil that need no glass or perspex covering. The work is on stretched canvas and is ready-to-hang, with sturdy hanging wire.
The work is signed on the front; date, title and artist name on verso.
Edges are painted black.

ARTIST BIO

Angeline is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist, living in rural Victoria with her partner and rescue cats.

BACKGROUND

Angeline has enjoyed success in the art field, after working in Radiology for many years. Her work has sold to hundreds of clients all over Australia, the US, Europe and the UK. Angeline is a proud member of the Art For Action Collective.

DEVELOPMENT OF STYLE

Having studied art under the guidance of her talented father, Angeline went on to complete formal studies in clay sculpture, oil painting, acrylics, graphite, lino cut, Indian ink and watercolour. Her studies encompassed still life, figurative, portraiture, landscape and abstract art. As part of her formal studies, she read art history and architecture, as well as completing units in graphic art and drafting.
Over time, Angeline's artistic expression has turned to Klimt-like depictions of the world around her. Her desire to express her ideas about her own experiences is reflected in the portraits and still life paintings she creates. Her use of mixed media breathes unique life into her work, creating contrast in both the depth and surface of her art.
Angeline is moved to create art that reflects a particular thought or inspiration, art that calms her busy brain and art that soothes her soul.

OTHER CREATIONS

Other than painting, Angeline is a writer. Her published works are Blood in the dust; The Anaswitch; and WickenRic. She is currently working on a fourth.
